Ai2’s HiRO-ACEv2 Simulates Global Weather at 3 km
The climate emulator generates fine-scale rain, wind and pressure fields, but is currently tied to one model climate.

Ai2 announced HiRO-ACEv2 on October 14, 2026, an AI climate-emulation system that generates global weather data at three-kilometer resolution. The institute says the system’s combined models cost roughly 300 times less to run than the high-resolution X-SHiELD atmospheric model. [1]
Ai2 reports that HiRO-ACEv2 reproduces extreme rain, wind and pressure statistics, including rare events, and generated a year of global three-kilometer data whose statistics closely matched X-SHiELD. The system pairs a model that simulates at 100-kilometer resolution with one that adds finer detail. [1]
The results are based on comparisons with X-SHiELD simulations, not proof of accuracy against observed weather or of operational forecasting performance. Ai2 says the emulator currently works only with a version of its coarse model tuned to X-SHiELD, and cannot yet generate high-resolution data for other climates, such as a warmer future. [1]
